It turned out to be a woman outside baggage claim holding a sign that read âGrant.â
âI didnât know you hired a car,â said Rachel.
âI didnât.â
The sign holder wasnât a limo driver, but one of the Seventeenth Precinct detectives sent by Lieutenant Harris, a one-woman welcoming committee to escort them back to his office.
She also happened to be the detective that Frankel had ditched a few nights earlier by climbing out the precinctâs bathroom window, and consequently made it clear that she wasnât going to let his fiancée and soon-to-be father-in-law out of her sight until sheâd delivered them to the Seventeenth.
Unfortunately, that was the only information the Grants were able to extract from Detective Dunham. So they sat silently in the back seat of the unmarked sedan as it worked its way on the LIE back to the city.
It was shortly before noon when Dunham deposited them in Desmond Harrisâs office. She told them that the lieutenant and Detective Meadows would be with them shortly. Dunham pointed out that the windows were double locked and didnât possess any sort of ledgeâjust in case they were thinking of replicating Detective Frankelâs exit.
Grant thanked her for the intel and watched her walk out the door.
He realized it had already been half a day since John Frankel had disappeared in the Maine night, and that as each hour passed without anyone hearing from him, he looked increasingly guilty and was solidifying himself as NYPDâs prime suspect.
âDid you try texting that number again?â Grant asked.
âOnce an hour, like you suggested. Nothing.â
âHe must figure that the police are monitoring your mobile. Iâd imagine that burner phone currently resides somewhere deep in the Maine forest by now.â
âThen how are we supposed to get in touch with him?â
âJohnâs an enterprising young man. Iâm sure when he wants to reach out to you, heâll find a way.â
Grant noticed this didnât placate his daughter, but he didnât have a chance to say more as the office door opened. Lieutenant Desmond Harris and Detective Taryn Meadows walked in. Neither looked happy nor appeared to have slept much.
âHow was Hawaii?â asked the lieutenant as he settled behind his desk.
âUnder normal circumstances, it would have been quite lovely,â quipped Grant. âI did enjoy the luau I attended.â
âYouâll forgive me if I donât ask what you had for dinner or if you managed to get in any swimming. Iâm much more interested if youâve been in touch with Detective Frankel recently.â
âSince he told us yesterday that he was in Maine?â Grant shook his head. âNot since then, no.â
Taryn, whoâd settled on the deskâs edge, leaned forward. âSo, you have been in touch.â
âSporadically,â answered Grant. He sensed Rachelâs eyes on him and gave her the slightest nod, hopefully indicating that she should fall into step alongside him. âMy daughter even relayed the message you left with Ms. Crowe.â
âI told John that you wanted to talk to him again; otherwise, you were going to issue a warrant for his arrest,â confirmed Rachel.
âObviously, circumstances have changed in the past few hours,â said Harris.
